Colour Love

Let’s just all stop for a second and take in this most beautiful of colour palettes from one my favourite brands, Jac + Jack. Oh, the dusty pink and wine coloured beauty! Contented sighs all round.

Apart from being an Australian owned brand, ethically made in luxurious yarn and generally just friggen awesome, Jac + Jack have smashed one out of the park with their colours this season. This is just one of the many stunning colour palettes they’ve created for Spring ’17, so if you haven’t seen the others, you should. Like now.

White Shirts Forever

Having written about them previously and sporting a couple myself in this post, you could be forgiven for thinking that I’m a bit obsessed with white shirts.

Well, you would be right!

What should you look for in a white shirt? Read on.

1.  Fabric Composition
In a world full of leaky coffee cups, eating on the run and heavy duty make up, your white shirt will need a good soak every now and again. Get yourself a shirt made from sturdy natural fibres such as cotton or linen as they’ll last long, breathe well, and because you’re worth it.

2. Fabric Type
By this I mean how the fabric feels. A crispy feel (cotton poplin) is neat and can be dressed up or down. A gauzy soft feel (cotton or linen) is more casual and is great for weekends and beach wear. Choose one or the other, or one of each!

2. Cut
There are a lot of options and the best fit for you will depend on your ‘style’ as well as your shape. For versatility, choose a shirt that has a small collar, simple front pocket (if any), and nice tidy buttons. Slightly roomy is much nicer and more flattering than slightly too small, so make sure there are no gaping buttons. Currently I like an oversize shirt, slightly drop shouldered with a scoop hem and hidden placket, but I seriously have every style of white shirt available and I wear them all. Experiment with the right style for you!

Rainy Day Solution

Rainy and windy miserable day…not good when you have wavy hair! This morning I looked like I was wearing a Tina Turner wig.

I’ve been needing a cap exactly for days like this. Hey presto, no more frizz! If only everything could be this easy.

Weekend Perv: Acne Boots

Quick, before the weekend is over! Acne Pistol boots in rose gold…very covetable, practical(ish), beautiful and indeed most worthy of the Weekend Perv themselves.

But take a moment to check out that whole outfit. Leather pencil skirt, House Of Hackney floral sweatshirt, chain bracelet, soft clutch and those boots…I want it all!

Outfit Emergency…To The Rescue!

It must be so hard to be a regular person who is photographed all the time (celebrities get free clothes and a stylist, regular people do not). You couldn’t just put off haircuts for a few more weeks (or a few more months in my case) and you definitely couldn’t get by on just a couple of go-to outfits. Being photographed in any of them just once would mean a new outfit for the next one.

My best friend Sarah-Jane Pyke gets photographed for magazines, press and various interviews quite a few times per year (apart from being generally awesome, it’s due to her very successful Sydney interior design practice Arent & Pyke). Outfits are normally all under control due to her impeccable taste and love of shopping, but last month she ran out of outfits and time, so I came to the rescue at the last minute with a beautiful floral dress for a shoot with Real Living Magazine (pictured second from left).

The shoot’s brief was ‘edgy and high fashion, and not black‘ (that’s hardly what people have casually lurking in the back of their wardrobe!). The dress I sourced was from the Winter ’14 range from Something Else by Natalie Wood. The bold floral pattern in purples, pinks and ivory is fantastic. The short shift shape is a modern classic, and the black front panels add a bit of interest and are super flattering. Black tights (sorry, there had to be some black!) and some jewel-coloured Vintage pumps finish the look.

Outfit fulfils the brief, looks pretty, and is something she’ll wear again…winner! Not bad for an outfit emergency.

Movie Moments: The Makeover Part V

pretty_woman_b_a_01pretty_woman_a_02

After last weeks man-makeover heaven thanks to ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’, we have one of my favourite movies ever…the storyline, the huge hair, the epic soundtrack (OMG Roxette!), the outfits, the megastars and one of the best movie moments of all time (“Big Mistake!”)…what didn’t Pretty Woman have? A sequel, that’s what. Pure 90’s gold that I could just watch again and again. Enjoy X Catalina.

Pretty Woman (1990), Dir. Gary Marshall

Ahhh, the quintessential makeover film. Granted, Julia Roberts has the bone structure and long limbs to make for a pretty breezy makeover. This however, does not detract from the fact that any woman watching this film will not fail to feel a certain yearning over her transition from escort to society lady. The thing about this movie is that, speaking as a woman who loves to shop, it delivers satisfaction on many levels. It’s a fairly obvious Cinderella story, with a happy Hollywood ending (actually, the Cinderella comparisons are so obvious here, they are even worked into the script) but the genius of Roberts’ transformation is that the shopping sequence is drawn out and detailed. Down to the now famous shopping denied sequence: “You people work on commission, right? Big mistake. Big. Huge. I have to go shopping now”. Waves armfuls of expensive shopping bags in uptight snooty shop assistant’s face. Sigh and clap (and raucous cheering from me –  X Catalina). There’s talk of spending ‘really offensive’ amounts of cash on high fashion. Sigh. Sigh and clap at every new outfit reveal. The end. Way more interesting than a fairy Godmother, some singing, a pumpkin and some mice.

Weekend Perv: Perfect Black Flats from Saint Laurent

SL flats body SL flats side and back

I’m forever in search of great black flats. I own a stack of them, but it’s a never ending search for the perfect pair, black flats are my holy grail of shoes.

I dare say this pair is very close to it…so sleek, so dainty and oh so very shiny. These beauties from Saint Laurent may just do it all: they’re work friendly, party friendly and everyday friendly. They look pretty with a skirt, and this pair absolutely nails a classic look teamed with a cropped pant. Yep, I can see myself strutting about in these, maybe even do a little moonwalk.

Being Saint Laurent they’re not exactly a steal. Sigh. But cost per wear could make them justifiable…or maybe I could have a fundraiser??

Friday Night

20130906-200449.jpg
Friday Night. It’s a beautiful thing…throwing off the shackles of the working week and letting your hair down.

This is a perfect Friday night outfit. You can just imagine the beautiful white shirt and sharp black blazer (both must-have wardrobe staples) earlier on in the day being paired with pencil skirt or slim trouser at work. Smooth day to night transition with the addition of leather something…shorts in this case but easily could be leather leggings or skirt.

So if I was heading out tonight for a night on the town (and I had these killer legs!) I would want to wear this excellent outfit…take two must-have staples and just add leather.

I haven’t mentioned the shoes yet because I was saving them til last. I can’t stop looking at them…They are amazing! Not sure how long I would last in them but frankly I don’t care because they are just too perfect.

Enjoy your Friday night!

Weekend Perv: Nike Air Max I VT WMNS

full bodyWhen Nike came out with the Air Max 90 I’d just started high school, was super impressionable (find me a 12 year old who isn’t) and they were what all the cool kids wore.  I desperately wanted a pair. Desperately.  They looked so cool with their fat soles, big window (so hi-tech at the time) and the super bright colours they came in. Not blessed with the legs required to pull of a pair of Reebok Pumps, I thought maybe the Airmax 90 was the answer to my sneaker problems. Sadly it wasn’t (my legs still wouldn’t co -operate and neither would my parents), but I loved them then, and I still have a soft spot for them ’til now.

crop close up legs

Fast forward to 2013 when everything 90’s is cool (well, except pencil thin eyebrows, brown lipstick and my collection of mixtapes) and “Sports Luxe” is like, an actual thing. I came across these beauties on net-a-porter during the week, and seriously, how cool are they? Yes I admit they are a little weird, but awesomely so.  Beige trainers whoever would’ve thunk it, the unusual colour combination gives the illusion of a chunky two-tone-brogue / sneaker hybrid. And that yellow, pure genius that is. These also come in a hi-top wedge version which look cool too, but they’re no Air Max if you know what I mean.

The high school version of me (and my inner homegirl) is in love with this classic Nike shoe in a new edition.  However the grown up version is annoyingly reminding me of the distinct “lady power walking home from work” look that happens when I try to wear sporty shoes with my conservative outfits. Sigh.

crop side (2)

Oh well, a girl can have a Weekend Perv! I’ll dust off my big hoop earrings, put on one of those mixtapes, channel my inner homegirl and dream about some new kicks.
