Shirts white 1

After last week’s post about white shirts, I wore white shirts for days. I have four of them¬†and would love a few more…if I find the perfect one you’ll hear about it!

Anyways, I¬†heard over and over again “what about one for guys?”, and seeing as¬†there is nothing sexier than a man in a crisp white shirt, here goes. A classic across the ages, dressed up or dressed down, a man in a white shirt is timeless chic.

Rainy Day Solution

Rainy and windy miserable day…not good when you have wavy hair! This morning I looked like I was wearing a Tina Turner wig.

I’ve been needing a cap exactly for days like this. Hey presto, no more frizz! If only everything could be this easy.

Matchy Matchy

I have been a fan of matching everything for as long as I can remember…one of my earliest memories is being about 4 years old and fervently insisting that the ribbons in my hair match the ribbon lace on my socks. Hmmm not much has changed.

20131115-125635.jpg
One of the best matching tricks is: shoes the same colour a your pants make your legs look longer. Yes it’s true! And who wouldn’t want longer legs, right? The colour extending all the way from your waist to your toes means there’s continuity and the eye is tricked into seeing longer legs.

Ladies know about this rule (thank you nude coloured pumps) but it may be news to even the most sartorial boys out there.

So now you know! No need to stick with black thanks to all the amazing coloured pants and shoes available for men at the moment. Examples seen here from Alfie’s Friend Rolfe.

1 Outfit, 3 Awesome Looks

3ways

I do love a good shirt. Luckily there are a lot of different styles around for Spring / Summer, and lots of prints too if you dare. As you can see in this look that I sourced for a client, the shirt is definitely the hero of this great semi-casual Spring outfit.

1. Worn unbuttoned and untucked for an easy and casual overshirt look.
2. Worn buttoned up with rolled sleeve for a neater but still casual look.
3. Worn tucked in with a nice belt for a more dressed up look.

Needless to say, this shirt was one of my client’s favourite pieces in the end…Excellent tailored cut, cotton linen fabric in tiny polka dot and sweet little pocket square detail made it a great buy and a pleasure to wear.

Garments2

Outfit consists of Scotch and Soda polka dot shirt, Light Comma Shadow patterned t-shirt, Maians Julian Shoes in Marengo, Carhart Sid Pants in Canyon.

The rest of the outfit needs a little credit too. Even though this look is a quite bold with the rust coloured chinos, a navy, olive or beige pant would work just as well and be more subdued. Black jeans would even work! And the shoes could change depending on the occasion of course.

Hope you like this outfit as much as my client did! I think it’s fun and relaxed, but still stylish. Really, that should be the aim of all outfits I think!

Outfit Emergency…To The Rescue!

It must be so hard to be a regular person who is photographed all the time (celebrities get free clothes and a stylist, regular people do not). You couldn’t just put off haircuts for a few more weeks (or a few more months in my case) and you definitely couldn’t get by on just a couple of go-to outfits. Being photographed in any of them just once would mean a new outfit for the next one.

My best friend Sarah-Jane Pyke gets photographed for magazines, press and various interviews quite a few times per year (apart from being generally awesome, it’s due to her very successful Sydney interior design practice Arent & Pyke). Outfits are normally all under control due to her impeccable taste and love of shopping, but last month she ran out of outfits and time, so I came to the rescue at the last minute with a beautiful floral dress for a shoot with Real Living Magazine (pictured second from left).

SJ RL Resized

The shoot’s brief was ‘edgy and high fashion, and not black‘ (that’s hardly what people have casually lurking in the back of their wardrobe!). The dress I sourced was from the Winter ’14 range from Something Else by Natalie Wood. The bold floral pattern in purples, pinks and ivory is fantastic. The short shift shape is a modern classic, and the black front panels add a bit of interest and are super flattering. Black tights (sorry, there had to be some black!) and some jewel-coloured Vintage pumps finish the look.

Outfit fulfils the brief, looks pretty, and is something she’ll wear again…winner! Not bad for an outfit emergency.

Outfits Aplenty!

20130923-222926.jpg
As a buyer for a store, you’re always working anywhere from a year to 6 months ahead. It’s a pretty big gamble. The most exciting part is when after hours and hours of appointments and showings and budgeting and culling and re-shuffling and more budgeting and then six months of waiting, the stock we painstakingly chose from a million and fifty things finally arrives…and it’s awesome! After a decade of being a buyer, I don’t have any major fails anymore (knock on wood…there have been some doozies in the past) but even nowdays it’s still a bit nervewracking when it all starts arriving.
all over patterns 1

Style Tip: All-over-prints are everywhere this season for guys. Not keen to look like a Hawaiian tourist? Excellent! Stick to a small pattern in a subdued hue, and team with solid plains.jeans

Style Tip: Sworn off your jeans forevs now that you’ve grown to love chinos? Well there’s no need to go to extremes, jeans are and always will be a must-have wardrobe staple. They’re awesome!¬†Stick to clean and structured if you are only going to get one pair.

chinosStyle Tip: Chinos are an excellent way to smarten up your outfit over summer. Opt for soft lightweight fabric, with a tapered leg. And do go colourful! I mean, it IS summer after all!

My favourite part is making outfits from the new arrivals, matching it all up and thinking about what kind of person would wear such an outfit and where they would wear it. I always think in outfits when it comes to buying…buying for the shop, for my Personal Shopping clients, for myself…anything that you buy needs to go with other things or you end up with a wardrobe full of “nothing to wear”.

So here’s a little outfit inspiration (for the guys…sorry ladies, your turn next) all these looks put together from the current selections at my store Alfie’s Friend Rolfe. Six months ago we chose all of these pieces from different boutique labels, and they all go together so perfectly! It takes a lot of research and planning, but the end result is excellent outfits aplenty.

If you need help with outfits then now is the time to contact me as it’s the beginning of the season and the perfect time to plan, source and buy…spend well and spend wisely.

Weekend Perv: Perfect Black Flats from Saint Laurent

SL flats body SL flats side and back

I’m forever in search of great black flats. I own a stack of them, but it’s a never ending search for the perfect pair, black flats are my holy grail of shoes.

I dare say this pair is very close to it…so sleek, so dainty and oh so very shiny. These beauties from Saint Laurent may just do it all: they’re work friendly, party friendly and everyday friendly. They look pretty with a skirt, and this pair¬†absolutely nails a classic look teamed with a cropped pant. Yep, I can see myself strutting about in these, maybe even do a little moonwalk.

Being Saint Laurent they’re not exactly a steal. Sigh. But cost per wear could make them justifiable…or maybe I could have a fundraiser??

Weekend Perv: Maison Martin Margiela mirror clutch

20130908-152655.jpg
Over the 10+ years that I’ve had my boutique, I’ve met a great many people with amazing style, and one of them walked into my store this week carrying this shiny covetable beauty. It’s amazing and now I want one more than a holiday so it totally deserves a bit of sharing for the Weekend Perv.

(The person carrying this bag always looks impeccable and unique and has the best accessories to perv on. Seriously, if only you could see the rest of the outfit, you’d faint at how good it is. Next time, if I think you can take it I promise to show you)

Maison Martin Margiela is one of those brands that cool fashion people wear (fashion designers, models, editors, buyers…you know, people that get snapped by The Sartorialist) and they do so because it’s luxurious, interesting and unusual, in other words it’s for grown ups. This curved clutch bag is the epitome of all those things. It features a fantastic concave perspex mirror panel on one side, beautiful soft leather on the other and an excellent chunky zip enclosure (I do love a good zipper, it’s so important). When held mirror side in the curve makes it super ergonomic. When held mirror side out, well it’s just super awesome.

Here’s a cheer for all things shiny and perv-worthy! Happy weekend x
